Megalithic Sunset: Illuminated night walk with the menhirs of Vila do Bispo

Megalithic Sunset: Illuminated night walk with the menhirs of Vila do Bispo - Full

A 3 km night-time interpretive walk along the Pedra Escorregadia – Monte dos Amantes – Cerro do Camacho Megalithic Trail (Vila do Bispo), led by municipal archaeologist Ricardo Soares and astronomer Fernando Pimenta, a member of the European Society for Astronomy in Culture. Along the route, participants learn about menhir-based megalithic culture and the ancient societies responsible for monumentalizing these landscapes during prehistory. Inscriptions on the menhirs are viewed using directed lighting techniques, revealing secrets that are difficult to discern in daylight. The connection between the menhirs and astronomy is also explored. Finally, set against the backdrop of the night sky, participants have the opportunity to take a celestial tour and discover mythological stories about the "birds" of the deep sky.
