Do white storks still migrate?

Do white storks still migrate?

White Storks used to be a fully migratory species, breeding in Europe and wintering in sub-Saharan Africa. However, in recent decades birds started to remain in Iberia all year round, with increasing numbers of wintering storks since the 1980s. This change in migratory behaviour has been accredited to several factors including foraging on open-air landfills, an extremely abundant food resource. With the use of GPS tracking technology, we can now follow birds throughout their life, identifying the costs and benefits of this new behaviour and its impact on stork migratory decisions.

This activity is facilitated by Marta Acácio.
