Festival returns to Sagres from 5 to 8 October

25 August 2023

From 5 to 8 October, Sagres will once again host the biggest nature and bird event in Portugal: the Birdwatching & Nature Activities Festival. At this time of year, thousands of birds fly over the Algarve, on their way to wintering grounds in Africa, providing a sight worthy of a festival. While hundreds of seabirds fly past the coast, vultures, eagles and storks soar through the skies in search of the route to Africa. On land, bushes and trees are stopping points for small songbirds looking to make the ambitious journey south. Among the latter is the Common Redstart, featured on this year’s poster.

To celebrate these feathered visitors and make the most of this amazing wildlife spectacle, the 14th edition of the Festival promises four days packed full of activities for all tastes. Alongside a variety of birdwatching sessions on land and sea, this festival offers a range of oportunities for nature-lovers to discover that the Algarve is so much more than beaches. There are also lots of options for birdwatchers’ families and friends, such as walks, hikes, talks, and challenges for children.

The programme will be available on 5th September, when registration will also open online here on the Festival website. Among the novelties this year there will be opportunities to explore rock-pools, take a moonlit walk or play nature-themed boardgames. The event is organised once more by Câmara Municipal de Vila do Bispo, in partnership with the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA) and Almargem.
