Four days, thousands of birds and a festival you can't miss

Four days, thousands of birds and a festival you can't miss

20 August 2025

From 2 to 5 October, all roads lead to Sagres, where Portugal's largest event dedicated to nature and birds – the Birdwatching & Nature Activities Festival – once again celebrates the spectacle of autumn migration. Hundreds of seabirds glide over the waves, eagles and storks dance in the sky, and small migrants stop off on the cliffs, trees and bushes on their long journey to Africa. At the centre of all this life and energy, the Blue Rock Thrush will be the star that wins hearts.

A festival with wings

The Birdwatching & Nature Activities Festival returns for its 16th edition with four days full of unique experiences. Get ready to embark on birdwatching trips on land and at sea, walk along secret trails, take part in inspiring talks and enjoy adventures designed for all ages. It's the perfect opportunity to discover that the Algarve is much more than just beaches — it's also a vibrant sanctuary of biodiversity.

The star of this edition

This year, the Festival's headliner is the Blue Rock Thrush (Monticola solitarius): elegant, mysterious and with an unmistakable song. Sagres is the best place in the Algarve to observe this bird, which inhabits cliffs and rocky areas, where the male's blue-grey plumage stands out against the landscape.
