Porto da Baleeira - Floating Pier
This year, in Vila Nova de Famalicão, a project funded by the EU through the LIFE program began, which aims to test solutions that help mitigate the effect of climate change. The solutions presented are based on ecosystem mechanisms that have an effect on rainwater retention, on its infiltration into the groundwater, on the reduction of the effect of floods and on the natural purification of effluents in such a way that they can be reused. Among the measures to be implemented, the restoration of wetlands and the reuse of effluents as a support for biodiversity are of greatest interest for the conservation of local birdlife.

The white stork is traditionally a migratory species that nests in Europe and winters in sub-Saharan Africa. However, since the 1980s, the number of individuals that remain on the Iberian Peninsula year-round has been increasing. This change in migratory behavior has been attributed to the use of landfills, an abundant food source. By using GPS tracking technology, we have now been able to follow the birds throughout their lives and identify the costs and benefits of this new behavior and its impact on the storks' migratory decisions.
This activity is facilitated by Marta Acácio.
The presentation will be in english and the talk will be held in portuguese.

Do you want to discover Sagres village, its long history and its natural surroundings?Did you know that Sagres means sacred?Did you know that the name Sagres was invented by the ancient Greeks?
After a Roman and Arab occupation, it was here, in Sagres, where the famous Infante D. Henrique built his village, sheltered in the walls of a fortress, organizing the first trips of the Portuguese Discoveries abroad.
But Sagres has a much older history! In this field-trip we will read the geological landscapes, discover fossils on the beach, observe Nature and meet the people of this land, that is made of sea.
Closed shoes, good for walking, hat, water and sunscreen.
Did you know that Sagres has been producing honey for about 2000 years? Archaeological research has documented, in Martinhal Bay, the pre-existence of an ancient Roman villa dedicated to the pottery industry, but also to the production of honey. Come and learn about this long history of harmonious coexistence between Nature, Flora, Bees and Man and take the opportunity to taste the pureness of the Sagres honey. The presentation will feature municipal archaeologist Ricardo Soares, José Manuel Amélio, Sagres beekeeper, and Nicolau da Costa (Black Bee), a beekeeper (among many other things).
Come with us in a 3 km night walk (duration - 3 hours), along Pedra Escorregadia megalithic route, guided by the municipal archaeologist Ricardo Soares, and the astronomer Fernando Pimenta (Quinta das Alagoas), member of European Society for Astronomy in Culture. Along the way, they will talk about the megalithic monuments and the ancestor cultures that monumentalized these landscapes during prehistory. Participants will also have the opportunity to take a celestial walk and discover some mythological stories about the deep sky birds.

We will discuss the value of the directive-protected habitats and other important habitats. Finally, we will acknowledge the value of traditional pastoralism and salute the typical shepherds of the area, given their vital contribution to maintaining the ecosystems necessary for many priority bird species such as the little bustard, the red-crested grouse and many others.
Participants need to bring their cars to the starting point of the field trip. The guide suggests to gather in small groups in order to use the lowest possible number of vehicles. Bring hiking boots, water, a small snack for the morning and birdwatching equipment.
During migration, birds can appear anywhere – and so can we! If there are any species that have been avoiding you or you want to see those elusive birds reported during the last days around Sagres – this is your chance! After a short meeting we will establish our destination and begin our quest to search for the most elusive birds that can be spotted in this region. With some luck we will be able to find the birds you’ve been waiting to see! Well, that’s the theory and of course we cannot guarantee surprises, but who knows?

Insects are the most diverse and abundant animals on Earth. They perform important ecological functions such as decomposition, pollination, pest control, and are also an essential resource, serving as food for a lot of animal species. Unfortunately, these little beings who rule the planet are generally unknown and not so popular amongst most people! That is why in this activity we will learn to identify Sagres Insects until the Order (at least), revealing their importance and some curiosities about their life cycles.
Theoretical-practical workshop for the identification of common Portuguese butterflies, suitable for all those interested in participating in the Citizen Science Project “Census of Portuguese Butterflies”. Very focused on the identification in the field of common species of butterflies, this activity will also let you know about the European butterfly monitoring plan and its methodology on the eBMS platform for data recording. After this workshop, participants will be able to participate in the Census, if they wish!
This talk will present the Bio-Ilhas project, which aims to restore degraded saltmarsh and salt pans environments, and to promote biodiversity conservation through the implementation of artificial islands in saltpans. With the implementation of these islands and the requalification of degraded salt marsh slopes, we will help to maintain populations of breeding birds such as the Little tern, the Collared pratincole and the Kentish plover, among others. This project is being implemented in the municipalities of Olhão and Faro, by Vita Nativa in partnership with Viridia, Conservation in Action.

We wish to present the exotic beauty of this country and reveal some secrets to those who want to travel to this destination.
A short theoretical session on field records for bird watching (15-30min), followed by a practical session (45-60min) to put the concepts presented into practice. Keeping a field notebook with a record of observations can help birdwatchers evolve in this practice more quickly, making their observations more valuable to themselves and to science, and can serve as a journal for later recall. In this activity, we will highlight what data should be recorded and we will also introduce a new tool that helps in this task.
For this activity, you will not need any equipment. The use of binoculars is recommended but optional. It doesn't matter what level of experience you have in birding and identifying birds.
We appreciate that participants arrive at the location of the activity 5 to 10 minutes before.
This activity is part of the project "Local Accommodation for Birds", that is being implemented throughout the Algarve region and aims to benefit some urban bird species. During the activity participants will learn how to build nest boxes for birds, namely for different species of titmouse that can be found in Portugal. We will also explain the importance of nest boxes, as well as the secrets of building and installing them, and the role of species in the balance of ecosystems.
Sagres is part of a natural park with a vast diversity of life forms, from plants that only exist in the Vicentine Promontory, to migrating dragonflies and orcas. In this activity we will do an initial explanation about iNaturalist, a citizen-science platform for recording biodiversity. Afterwards, we will conduct a walk-through to record local biodiversity using the iNaturalist application. These records, once entered into the platform, can then be used by any scientist around the world.
